What makes scaffolding in Ely different

Ely is a small city with a big divide. The streets around the cathedral and Palace Green are conservation area, full of period and listed property where fixings need care and the scaffold often can't tie into the building at all. Out past the ring road it's a different world: Fen villages, farmhouses and plots with plenty of room but sometimes a lane that a scaffold lorry has to reverse down.

The practical difference is where the constraint sits. In the centre it's the building fabric and the pavement; out in the Fens it's getting the lorry to the property at all. Both are workable - they just need knowing about before we quote rather than discovering on the day.

No obligation. We'll usually come back to you the same working day.

Around the area

Around Ely and the villages

Cathedral area and the city centre

Conservation-area property, much of it listed. Ties into historic fabric need care, and an independent structure that doesn't touch the building is often the right answer. Highway licences are common here because the pavements are narrow.

Broad Street and the riverside

Older terraced and townhouse property, tight frontages and limited parking. Access for material is usually the deciding factor on how long the job takes.

Modern estates north and east

Post-war and newer housing with driveways and rear access - straightforward residential scaffolding and a steady run of solar installations.

Littleport, Witchford and Sutton

Village property with generous plots. Access is usually easy once the lorry is there; the question is whether the lane will take it.

Fen farmhouses and outbuildings

Exposed sites where wind loading matters more than it does in town, and bigger roofs - often the jobs where a temporary roof earns its cost.

Commercial and agricultural

Units on the industrial estates and agricultural buildings out in the Fens - see commercial scaffolding.

Licensing

We handle the Ely licence

Scaffold standing on a pavement or road in Ely needs a highway licence, and only registered companies can apply for one. We're registered with Cambridgeshire and apply as part of the job.

Cambridgeshire County Council

Not the district council

The county is the highway authority, so scaffold licences go through them rather than the local district or city council.

Registered companies only

You can't apply yourself

Applications can only be made by companies registered with the county for this purpose - part of what you're paying a scaffolder for.

Up to 15 working days

Start it early

Processing takes up to three working weeks, and the charge runs per street per 30 days. Book well before your trades are due.

Ely's centre has narrow pavements, so highway licences come up more often here than on the modern estates. If the scaffold stays entirely within your own boundary, no licence is needed.

Questions

Scaffolding in Ely, explained

Yes, and it comes up often given how much of central Ely sits in the conservation area. The difference is in how the structure is tied - fixings into historic fabric need care, and sometimes an independent scaffold that doesn't touch the building at all is the correct answer. Tell us the property is listed when you enquire.

Yes - Littleport, Witchford, Sutton, Haddenham and the surrounding villages are all part of our normal patch. The only thing worth flagging on a rural job is lane access, because a scaffold lorry needs somewhere to turn.

Cambridgeshire County Council, as the highway authority - not East Cambridgeshire District Council, which is what most people assume. Only registered companies can apply, and it can take up to 15 working days, so it needs starting before your trades are booked.

No. We price the job, not the postcode - the same structure costs the same whether it's in Ely or Cambridge. What does change the price is access and how much of the building needs covering.
